Hair Types

Oprah's Hair Stylist, Andre Walker has classified hair into various hair types in his book "Andre Talks Hair". This system is the most commonly used to classify hair textures and how tightly coiled your hair is.It is always best to know your particular hair type before attempting to determine the best products to use for your hair.

Type 1-2 hair is straight or wavy fine hair.

Type 3 hair is wavy but mostly curly.
A--Curls are naturally big, loose and usually very shiny.
B- Is curly hair with an S pattern.
C- Is curly kinky hair. It has tight corkscrew curls.

Type 4 hair is kinky and very tightly coiled.Type 4 hair has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type, which means that it has less natural protection from the damage you inflict by combing, brushing, curling, blow-drying and straightening it.Type 4 hair is known to shrink up to 75% of the actual hair length.

A- It has a definite curl pattern. Smaller S shaped curls
B- Has a Z shaped pattern. It bends at sharp angels like a Z. It is very soft and has a cotton like feel.
C- Has no curl pattern at all.

It is difficult while transitioning to find out your natural hair type and impossible to find out your natural hair type if you are relaxed. If you have over 3 inches of new growth it may be a bit easier to do after you wash it. Relaxed ends could be weighing your hair down however and your curls could be much tighter once you BC.

WHAT'S YOUR HAIR TYPE?
